Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School - ages preschool through 6th grade

Each summer, New Horizon offers a week of evening fun, including a meal, Bible study, science and craft projects, as well as music and mission. Past themes have included camping, the beach, and hot air balloons.

At the end of June, the kids and adults of the New Horizon family spent a fun week at “Camp E.D.G.E.” This was the 2009 Vacation Bible School theme, which centered on camping and the idea that you can “Experience and Discover God Everywhere.” Each night of the week focused on a “trek” taken from a Bible story and the activities and lessons built on that premise.

The first night involved a trek to the Promised Land, where we learned about God’s promise to keep the Israelites safe and guide them across the River Jordan.

The second night, we took a trek to Bethlehem, where we learned about the Magi following God’s star to guide them to Jesus.

On the third night, we embarked on a trek to the Pharisee’s house, where we learned about Jesus attending a party and teaching those there that they should put other’s needs before their own.

The fourth night had us taking a trek to the upper room, where Jesus met with the disciples for the last supper and where he washed their feet. We learned that there is no task that is beneath us in order to help other people.

On the final night of Camp E.D.G.E., we took a trek to Galilee where Jesus met with the disciples after he had risen from the dead. We learned about his message to his followers...to spread the word of God’s love to all people. We talked about ways we could spread God’s word, such as inviting our friends to come to church with us. Our science experiment had us flying rubber band-powered airplanes, showing us that with God’s power behind us, we can soar.

It was a busy and fun week, and the treks that we made together taught us that we really can experience and discover God everywhere.
